Oof, doing the same question right now actually.
1. But Nixon's policy of detente was good because it eased tensions within the United States and Soviet Union (short answer)
2. it was a great idea. Research into the space age weapons was one of the ways we outspent the Russians on military hardware. By outspending them on defense, we caused them implode and force them to abandon their aims of conquest by military means. They couldn't outspend us.

- I believe that the détente policy was good for the United States, first because Americans were tired of the tension that was in the air during the long years of the Cold War. Even though the Cold War brought a series of technological advances, the population was always in a break of a nuclear war, which was not good. With the détente policy, the tension was released and a series of agreements were signed, that prevented military clashes, arms control, cooperative research between Russia and the US and also the sale of grain.
- Nixon’s strategic defense initiatives emphasized defense spending as the answer to save lives instead of avenging them. I believe this was not a good idea because during the defense of his strategy Nixon told the public that the US would use a series of technology that in that period of time seemed unrealistic and created a false sense of security, it also meant to justify government spending on the weapons despite the fact that during the presidential campaign he promised the contrary.
