The author's purpose in this excerpt IS TO INTRODUCE A CHARACTER VERSUS SOCIETY SOCIAL CONFLICT.
In the excerpt given above, we are told that white people went to the house of a black boy and asked for him from his mother. During the time of slavery, when the white and the black did not have any cordial relationship, this kind of visitation spells trouble for the boy. Thus, the excerpt shows the social conflict that existed in the society then.
