The treaty got its name from the Villa de Guadalupe Hidalgo which was a neighborhood of Mexico City. The treaty also gave the US the ownership of California along with Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado. In the senate the treaty was opposed by the Whigs, they were also opposed to Manifest destiny.
