Asylum and refugee status are special legal protections available to people who have left their home country for their own safety and are afraid to return to any place within that country. (If you can relocate and live safely within your home country, you will not be able to demonstrate that you have a well-founded fear of persecution and you will not be granted asylum in the U.S.)
