Solidarity
The labor union led by Lech Walesa was known as Solidarność in its Polish name. It was the first trade union in a Warsaw Pact country that was not controlled by the communist party. Founded in 1980, the union became a large social movement and is credited for helping to bring down communism in Poland. In 1990, Walesa was elected as president of Poland.
