It was difficult for American ground forces to clear areas of guerrillas in Vietnam, because the guerrillas hid themselves from the American forces. The Vietnamese guerrillas knew the terrain in which they battled the American forces, so it was easy for them to hide in moments of inferiority.
The North Vietnamese guerrillas were also more capable fighters, as they had been battling since the end of World War II against France. They had more experience in guerrilla warfare, which gave them an advantage in jungle battles.
