Why were protests held in Ghana in 1948 and how it affected Nkrumah?

Ghana saw large-scale protests in 1948, known as the Accra riots. They formed in Accra and initially consisted of decorated Ghanaian troops who fought alongside the British in World War II but never received the promised pensions and jobs upon their return.

While it began as a peaceful protest, it quickly became fatal when the British opened fire on the protestors, sparking even more disturbances in the following days.

The British authorities quickly arrested Nkrumah and other local politicians for coordinating and instigating protestors.

This was a highly contentious decision in his government because it allowed any innocent person to be jailed on the basis of political and ideological objectives opposing Nkrumah's.

This alienated many of Nkrumah's allies, who were scared of being labeled as adversaries or opponents of his programs.
