number of students is 48
Amount collected from students=48*(1.5)=$72
Amount collected from adults=3.5*x=3.5x

Total amount collected will be:
72+3.5x=149
solving for x we have:
3.5x=149-72
3.5x=77
thus
x=77/3.5
x=22
thus the number of adults was x =22
