The West was an unexplored region. Many people (49ers) moved because of the Gold Rush in California. Other people moved for the fertile land.
Some 300,000 migrants, known as "forty-nine" (named after their first arrival in California, 1849), placed their spot and make their own of the river, where they arrived, pans used to extract gold from silt deposits.
