Mesopotamia at 3200 BCE and Mesoamerica at 600 BCE, are believed to be the places which have the oldest records of writing. Writing systems were developed in Egypt in 3200 BCE and China in 1200 BCE, but it is unclear whether they initiated the process or if their knowledge came about as a result of cultural diffusion.
