One of the arguments used by Luther against the Catholic Church, was that they were stealing money from poor people by making them pay for a spot in heaven by using instruments such as the indulgences, when this privilege was something that could not be provided by the church, as it was supposed to be a gift from God.
Hence, the church was manupulating the teachings of theology to obtain profit. They were "selling salvation". From Luther's protest, the Reformation started in the 16th century in Germany, and Protestantism was born as a new branch of the Christian religion, different from the Catholicism.
There were three things in the heart of Luther’s outrage at the church’s “salvation for sale”. He protested for salvation that was only for people with money, injustice, and class inequity.
EXPLANATION
Martin Luther was a monk at that time, but then he wrote a letter of protest to Albert. Luther did not like it when the church twisted theology of Christianity for gaining money. The church twisted Christian theology by selling salvation for people to buy.
Salvation can be sold and bought. Luther believed that salvation should be free since it is a gift of grace from God. Luther sent the letter of protest on October 31, 1517. Luther nailed the protests to all the door of the churches back then. With Luther’s action, the Protestantism was born.
Luther’s act in the year 1517 still gave us effects until this day. He was blamed because he made the secular democracy rise, nevertheless, it was his own Christian theology that’s being twisted around. Luther disagreed with the Catholic Church because of many reasons.
The main reason was that people could buy indulgences, so their punishment after they die will be reduced. Luther also believed that Christians should only hold onto the Bible and nothing else. He taught that the Bible itself was the one and only source of revelation. Luther believed that salvation could not be bought and that it should be free as a grace from God.
