Answer :

Octet rule : It is a general chemical rule. It states that every atom wants to have eight valence electrons in its valence shell.

The steps involved in the Lewis dot structure of given molecules are :

  • First we have to determine the total number of valence electron in a molecule
  • Draw the skeleton of the molecule.
  • Placing a bonding pair of electrons between the atoms to form the chemical bonds.
  • The remaining electrons are used as a lone pair for central or terminal atoms to achieve an octet to finish the Lewis dot structure.

Total number of valence electrons in :

(a) [tex]SCl_2[/tex] = 20

(b) [tex]CCl_4[/tex] = 34

(c) [tex]NF_3[/tex] = 26

(d) [tex]CH_2C(CH_3)_2[/tex] = 24
