the federal deficit grew.

A negative effect of the American recovery and reinvestment act was that the federal deficit grew.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was passed by President Barack Obama in 2009  in response to the Great Recession. It consisted on a stimulus package launched in order to stave off the destruction of jobs, encourage the creation of new ones, and promote the aggregate demand as a mechanism for economic recovery. Besides, this sought to provide temporary relief programs for those most affected by the recession and invest in infrastructure, education, health, and renewable energy.
