Colonial Period

In 1664 the Duke of York equipped an arm expedition, which took possession over New Amsterdam which was later called NEW York after the Duke. Because of the treaty of Credo in July 1667, this conquest could be confirmed.

Later in July 1673 the Dutch took revenge and its fleet recaptured New York and held it, until it was restored to the English by the treaty of Westminster in February 1674.

American Revolutionary War

After the Westminster treaty, the British controlled New York until the end of the American revolutionary war (1783).
