It is likely that he is doing it on peer pressure, that is, when people do things because of an oft unofficial rule that they have to perform to be accepted in a group or at least not tobe frown upon. Basically he just wants to avoid the comments that may arise on his back and also the looks the usher might bgive him if he does not cooperate.
