The hippies of the 1960s are an example of counterculture. This movement began in the early 1960s as a youth movement in United States and then developed around the world. Hippies wanted to be free from social restrictions, and choose their own way. They questioned authority and distanced themselves from the conformist segments of the society. They were the opposite to the "establishment", that is why the movement is considered an example of counterculture.

Option A refers to the spread of belief and social activities of one culture to other cultures. For example, the celebration of Saint Patrick's Day in countries not related to Irish traditions.

Option B refers to the dominant culture in a society, whose ways, traditions, customs, etc are those normally followed in public.

Option D, formal norms, refers to laws.
