The term “Balkan powder keg” is referred to the Balkans in the early phase of the twentieth century preceding the First World War. The Balkan was known as the “Balkan powder keg” due to the unstable political situation in the region. There were many overlying claims to areas and fields of influence between the dominant European nations, including the Russian Empire, the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and, to some extent, the Ottoman Empire, the U. K. and the Kingdom of Italy.
