The correct answer is C. The industry of petroleum revolutionized the economy of Texas in the early 1900s.

On January 10, 1901, Texas entered a period of economic development caused by the discovery of oil. The first well was the so-called Spindletop, located near Beaumont, which revealed the existence of a large deposit in the subsoil characterized by high daily productivity. Other deposits were discovered later throughout the state and, after the Second World War, even under the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, allowing a great development in this area. Part of the oil revenues were used, among other things, to finance a development fund for state universities. At its peak, in 1972, the average production was three million barrels a day.
