Most slaves were not able to find work due to discrimination. Many had no money to live on somewhere else, so they remained at their masters' plantation. Slaves who had good relationships with their former masters would ask to be reimbursed for the work they had done in the past years. Slaves did not have much education, so moving away would have been very frightening. Slaves chose to stay with their masters because they would have a steady job, something important to them in order to provide to their families.
