Did the idea of manifest destiny cause westward migration and political support for territorial expansion, or did it only justify actions taken for other reasons?
White folks had been expanding into the west long before the term manifest destiny was coined. Basically politicians need a reason it was okay that they where violently murdering people (native Americans).
