The theorem says that the diameter bisects the chord in a right angle, so we will have two halves that measure the same so that's why we drew two hash marks on each half of the chord.
A problem about this is indicated in figure 2. Suppose you have a perpendicular dropped from the center of the circle to a chord and you know that the left half measures 2 cm, so we want to know the x-value of the right half. Since the diameter bisects the chord, then it is true that [tex]x=2cm[/tex] as well.
