It is better to describe ion formation as a transfer of electrons rather than ''gaining and losing'' electrons because;
An atom becomes a cation after losing an electron to another atom while the atom gaining the electron becomes anion.
- Usually, atoms could gain or lose electrons when they react with other atoms or chemical species.
- Now, when an atom loses an electron as a result of its' reaction with another element or chemical specie, the lost electron is transferred to the other atom it is reacting with.
- Thus, one atom is gaining an electron while another is losing that electron. And when there is this type of losing and gaining of electrons, it is called transfer of electrons because because the two atoms having this electron transfer relationship will form an ionic bond after the transfer.
- Thus, since the two atoms form an ionic bond by formation of an ion, we can't say they are just losing and gaining electrons because that process leads to the formation of an ion and it is transfer of electrons that causes formation of ion.
