How can two members of the same kingdom belong to different species, while two members of the same species must belong to the same kingdom?

Biological classification uses taxonomic ranks, including among others (in order from most inclusive to least inclusive): Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species, and Strain.

Kingdoms are very general- within the animal kingdom we can have both a sperm whale and a house fly. Species however are very specific. A plant and an animal will NEVER be part of the same species as they are not classified under the same kingdom
