Evolution and Natural Selection Lab Report
Instructions: In the Natural Selection lab you will explore adaptations that help organisms survive best in a particular habitat. You will observe how changing a factor in the environment will impact the organisms that live there over time. Record your observations in the lab report below. You will submit your completed report.

Name and Title
Include your name, instructor's name, date, and name of lab.

Objective(s)
In your own words, what was the purpose of this lab?

Hypothesis
In this section, please include the if/then statements you developed during your lab activity. These statements reflect your predicted outcomes for the investigations. You will investigate two different versions of the tree environment as it changes over time: light-colored bark and dark-colored bark. Be sure to list your hypothesis for each environment below.

Example: If I investigate the light-colored bark environment, then I will observe an increase in the light-colored peppered moths over time.

Hypothesis for the light-colored bark:

Hypothesis for the dark-colored bark:

Procedure
The procedures are listed in your virtual lab. You do not need to repeat them here. Please be sure to identify the test variable (independent variable) and the outcome variable (dependent variable) for this investigation.

Reminder: The test variable is the item that is changing in this investigation. The outcome variable is the item that you are measuring in this investigation.

Test variable (independent variable):

Outcome variable (dependent variable):

Data
You will investigate both environments. Record your data for each trial of that environment in the data charts below.

Conclusion
Your conclusion will include a summary of the lab results and an interpretation of the results. Please write in complete sentences.

What caused the tree bark to become darker?
In the lab simulation, which color peppered moth was able to have the higher rate of survival on the light bark?
In the lab simulation, which color peppered moth was able to have the highest rate of survival on the dark bark?
During the Industrial Revolution, explain what caused the population of light-colored peppered moths to decrease and the population of dark-colored peppered moths to increase over time. Be sure to include how the ability to survive and reproduce impacts the process of natural selection.
Predict which color peppered moth would have a better chance of survival in your neighborhood? Explain why.

Conclusion

Your conclusion will include a summary of the lab results and an interpretation of the results. Please write in complete sentences.

1. What caused the tree bark to become darker?

What caused the tree bark to be darker is the day the darker the day is the darker the tree bark gets.

2. In the lab simulation, which color peppered moth was able to have the higher rate of survival on the light bark?

The light peppered moth had a higher rate of survival on the light bark.

3. In the lab simulation, which color peppered moth was able to have the highest rate of survival on the dark bark?

The dark peppered moth had a higher rate o survival then the light peppered moth on a dark bark.

4. During the Industrial Revolution, explain what caused the population of light-colored peppered moths to decrease and the population of dark-colored peppered moths to increase over time. Be sure to include how the ability to survive and reproduce impacts the process of natural selection.

The trees were also darkened as a result and the light-bodies moths that were able to blend with the light-coloured lichens and tree barks were in danger due to their predation by the birds. This shows to the rapid decrease of the light-coloured moths.

5. Predict which color peppered moth would have a better chance of survival in your neighborhood? Explain why.

I think the dark peppered moth had more chance to survive in my neighbourhood because its a lot of times dark and faster here because we are more in the north.

Conclusion:

Were your hypotheses correct or incorrect? Why or why not?

Yes, it was correct. I said that as it snowed the white rabbit population would increase, which is what happened. You could only really see the brown rabbits which made them an easy target.

Using Table 1, which color rabbit had the higher rate of survival in the light-colored environment? Explain why this occurred.

The white rabbits did because they could not really be seen unlike the brown rabbit, they stood out on the snow so everyone could see them.

Using Table 2, which color rabbit had the higher rate of survival in the dark-colored environment? Explain why this occurred.

The brown rabbits had a higher rate of survival because in the woods the brown blends in more than the white rabbits.

What color rabbit seemed to camouflage the best in this snow habitat, and why?

The white rabbits camouflaged better in the snow habitat because of their white coat. They could blend into the snow and not be seen.

Questions:

How did the colors of each type of prey affect its population size over time?

The brighter the color the more predators it’s going to attract, which is why in the winter zone the brown rabbit’s population got smaller and in the wood zone the white rabbit’s population got smaller.

How do you predict the data would change if you continued? Explain your answer.

There could be two outcomes, the first would be the brown or white population would have just gotten smaller and the second one is that the background would have changed into the different seasons meaning that the population would soon rise and the cycle would just repeat itself.

What traits would help a predator be more “fit” to survive in each environment? Be specific.

If the predator was able to camouflage into the environment, as well as having speed and stamina for chasing their prey. They would also need the right genes because no matter what some animals just can’t live in some places.

Describe other adaptations besides color that could affect an individual’s survival.

Their mating seasons, every animal has to earn a chance to mate and if they do not get picked then they stay alone or they have to wait until next season. What they eat is another thing. If they only eat meat then it would be a little easier then if you were a plant eater because you would have to plan ahead of time.

Explain what will happen if there are not enough resources to support the individuals in a species.

If there aren’t enough resources thn populations will start to die off, at first it wouldn’t be a big drop but after a while it will. Once the population gets to a lower number then there would be enough resources for the small groups left.

This experiment tested natural selection. What could be another possible mechanism of evolution for the rabbits to evolve? Be specific.

(I got everything but the last. I'm really sorry but I hope the rest helped. If I get it I'll it later on)
