At that time, New technologies that were invented during industrial revolution just got into United States. Both, only the northern states implemented the technology into their production. The southern states chose to stick using human labor for their production.

This made the northern states advanced at a much faster ride compared to the southern states.

But, not all people in the south thought the same. Some of them realized that  they need to implement the new technologies from the industrial revolution in order to improve southern states' economy. These people formed a group that's known as the New South Movement.
