Slavery caused the US to overlook the panhandle area of Oklahoma which was considered a lawless territory of the Seminole Indians. Once the US became aware of the lawlessness they began to remove the Seminoles.

The issue of slavery played a role in the demand to remove the Seminoles in Florida because of slaves.

  • Slaves ran away from southern plantation to Florida during the Spanish reign in the region.
  • The harsh working condition and cruelty in Southern states forced slaves to run away further in Florida.
  • The issue of the removal began when Georgian planters (white) demanded their return from the government.
  • The government also wanted to move Seminoles to the West.
  • Looking at the demand for the runaway slaves and removal of Seminoles allowed the government to pass the Treaty of Camp Moultrie.

Therefore, we can conclude that the Federal government looked at both of the issues by removing the Native Americans from Florida and captured free slaves from the area.
