Before 1836 the head of a family could get up to 4,605 acres and as time went on they could still obtain up to 640 acres of land. People who bought the land did not have to live on it which meant they could sell it to other settlers and make a good profit. Immigrants were promised additional land if they stayed for three years. They also knew that their property and goods would not be taken away if they were in debt which was very important during the deprssion in Texas. Immigrant agents also recruited settlers to move to Texas and made the process very easy for them to gain land.
