Truman said that if Greece and Turkey did not receive the aid that they urgently needed, they would fall to communism with grave consequences throughout the region. Communism was a huge issue and they didn't need another country to fall to it. Because Turkey and Greece were huge rivals, it was necessary to help both even though the threat to Greece was more immediate.
