A majority of the children examined in Ainsworth's study (and later research) were found to have an attachment style called secure attachment. The majority of the sample taken in Ainsworth's research consisted of securely connected children.
Three basic attachment styles—secure, insecure avoidant, and insecure ambivalent/resistant—were distinguished by Ainsworth (1970). She came to the conclusion that early contacts with the mother were the cause of distinct attachment style.
Children having secure attachment, have faith that their attachment figure will be there for them when they need them. When in danger, they seek for the attachment figure and utilise it as a foundation from which to explore their surroundings (Main, & Cassidy, 1988). When the caregiver pays attention to their cues and attends to their needs, babies form a stable relationship.
