The following is NOT one of the meanings of the word "narrative" in regard to movies: A type of movie. The story that a particular film tells.
A story about an event or events is referred to as a narrative, account, recital, or history. Narrative is a broad term for a story, whether long or short; past, present, or future; true or envisioned; told for any purpose; and containing or lacking much detail.
A narrative film is one that uses filmmaking techniques to tell a cohesive, almost always fictional, plot with cause-and-effect events. Narrative films have two parts: the tale itself and the methodology of telling the story. The latter includes time-honored filmmaking techniques including certain directing, cinematography, and screenwriting.
