When Mt. St. Helen erupted in 1980, all living organisms within the immediate blast zone were killed by the explosion and debris, primary succession occurred in this area following this catastrophic disturbance.
Forty years past, when 2 months of earthquakes and tiny explosions, Mount St. Helens cataclysmically erupted. A high-speed blast leveled countless trees and ripped soil from bedrock. The eruption fed a soaring plume of ash for over 9 hours, and winds carried the ash many miles away.
