Nadia Boulanger was a conductor, organist, and one of the most significant 20th-century instructors of musical composition (born September 16, 1887, Paris, France—died October 22, 1979, Paris). In both America and Europe, Boulanger was the first female conductor of a number of prestigious orchestras, including the BBC Symphony, Boston Symphony, Hallé, and Philadelphia orchestras. She conducted a number of world debuts, such as pieces by Stravinsky and Copland. She relocated to Paris to enroll in his singing lessons at the Conservatoire, and in 1877, when she was 20 and he was 62, they were married.

Ten years later, in Paris, Juliette Nadia Boulanger, was the couple's first child. She began taking lessons in music from her mother by the time she turned six. In 1893, Lili, a second child, was born.
