Because they lie in the rain shadow
A rain shadow is land that has been forced to become a desert because mountains prevent all plant growth and rainy weather. On one side of the mountain, the wet weather system brings rain and snow. On the other side of the mountain, the rain shadow side, all precipitation is blocked.
It is warm and dry in the shade of the rain. The other side of the mountain is wet and cool. The difference is as air masses move from low to high altitude, they expand and cool. This cold air cannot absorb moisture as well as the warm air. Cold air forms clouds, and when you climb mountains, it rains and snows. After the air mass crosses the top of the mountain and descends on the other side, the air warms and the clouds disperse. This means less precipitation.
You can often find rain shadows along some of the world's most famous mountain ranges. Death Valley, a desert in California and Nevada, USA. It is very hot and dry desert because it is in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. A rain shadow of Tibet, China and India, the Tibetan Plateau owes its dry climate to the majestic Himalayas.
