James Lind joined the Royal Navy as a surgeon's mate, in this way he could observe the effects of lack of cleanliness in the sailors’ health. He argued about the beneficial effects of ventilation, cleanliness in men’s bodies and bedding and the fumigation with arsenic of below deck. While traveling in the sea he conducted one of the first controlled clinical trials. He took twelve men suffering from scurvy and divided them into six pairs. He treated each pair with a different remedy. The ones that took oranges and lemons were nursing the others by the end of the week .
