The sum of two numbers is 18. The sum of the greater number and twice the smaller number is 25. Find the numbers. Be sure to write the two equations and then find both number

Let x be the greater number & y the smaller.

Now translate English into Math language:

x+y =18
x+2y =25
Solve by elimination:
y=7 and x =11

So first of all you will need to convert the word problem into equations..

Num1 + Num2 = 18 Num1 + 2 x Num2 = 25, where Num2 is the smaller number Now solve for Num2 by subtracting the first equation from the second equation..    Num1 + 2*Num2 = 25-[Num1+     Num2 = 18================                   Num2 = 7 Then plug Num2 = 7 back into either equation to get Num1 = 11
