The enlightenment work of John Locke was very influential in helping fuel the spark of Independence. Locke’s influence was most heavily felt in Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence. The enlightenment was more pronounced in the constitution than the actual revolution though. The works of Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Voltaire heavily influenced the drawing of the constitution, and the bill of rights that followed it.
