El Nino is caused by water at the equator near the Eastern Pacific ocean becoming warm. This warmness causes the water to vaporize and rise up. Similarly, the water also makes the atmosphere warm, allowing the moisture-rich air to develop into fierce rains, ultimately causing the increased precipitation during that year. The El Nino year 1997 is a famous example of this event.
