New France was declared a territory of France by 1534 by Jaques Cartier. The territory extended from Newfoundland to the Rocky Mountains, and from Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Mexic. The territory was divided into colonies, each with its own administration. The colonies were known as Canada, Newfoundland, Louisiana and Acadia.  Cities such as Quebec and Montreal were founded in Canada. These colonies were established to export fish, furs and sugar to France. The territory was ceded to Spain and Great Britain in 1763.
