•William Lloyd Garrison was born on December 10, 1805, in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He was the son of a merchant sailor. At the age of three, Garrison’s father left the family. Frances Maria, Garrison’s mother, a devout Baptist, struggled to raise her children.
•In 1826, after his apprenticeship and acquisition of skills for running a newspaper, Garrison borrowed capital from his employer to purchase the Newburyport Essex Courant.
•In 1840, The American Foreign and Anti-slavery Society was formed after some members of AAS found Garrison’s society lacking initiative to take real political action aside from writing.
