The Rhodophyta are red in color and Phaeophyta are green in color but Phaeophyta’s body may be filamentous or may show root like hold fast, stemlike stipe and leaf like blades. Many of them have air bladders which keep them afloat
We can differentiate between two algae type that contain similar pigments by paper chromatography.
Rhodophyta and Phaeophyta
- Rhodophyta are red algae and are the oldest eukaryotic algae. In red color algae, phycobiliprotein is present as pigment.
- They are found abundantly in marine areas.
- Phaeophyta are brown algae in which the chlorophyll is covered with a pigment called fucoxanthin.
Thus, by chromatography we can find out which pigment is present in the species and easily find out the species of the algae.
