Samuel Gompers was the leader of the American Federation of Labor. This union was one of the largest in the country and focused on skilled laborers. Terrence Powderly was leader of the Knights of Labor. 
These all deal with the early labor movement. Samuel Gompers and Terrence Powderly helped to start some of the first unions, strikes and boycotts. Their goals were gain better wages, working conditions, and hours. The Haymarket Square Riot was initially a protest that turned violent.
